I've always thought highly of Ferdinand Lundberg's classic The Rich and The Super Rich. Probably a little dated now--but--still a good point of departure.
Lundberg characterized the USA 30 years ago as the big banana republic. Things have surely gone that way in America for the last 30 years and noticeably that way for American labor for the last 20 years or so.
This illegal alien amnesty move by Clinton/Sweeney is just another move in that direction; if you noticed in the news reports the corporate propaganda agency called the US Chamber of Commerce loved this latest move by the Clinton/Sweeny team.
Possibly, the hindsteiners(that's people who make rocket science out of ass kissing) at the AFL-CIO think they can control a north of the border low wage maquilladora stretching from Texas through California with an easily manipulated, illiterate population happy to be making minium wage. If the strawberry campaign is any indication--then you can see where this is going. The otherside of this coin is the federal government sanctioned use of scabs and paramilitary forces even in strong union states like Ohio. Can you imagine what will go on in a north of the border low wage maquilladora.
Then there is Sweeney's own union the SEIU which has a reputation as a dues collection machine that does not service its own members!
Let's not forget about the practical geo-politics either of how federal money is apportioned to the states based on population and how representation is based on population.
