U.N. to assess cyanide spill

Thanks for posting this, Ulhas! The information over here has been scanty but still: at the moment the concentration of cyanide in Vidin (west-most Bulgarian point on the Danube) are reported to be under the norm (source: BG eco-ministry watch); the Roumanian TV has just announced that their analyses have not shown exceeding of permittable quantity; the news release on ORT (state Russian TV) about 5 hours ago showed an extensive (5') doc from Reni & Ismail (Ukrainian Danube/Black Sea points) that also do not report increase in cyanide. However, the Ukranians say they do not have the funds to pay for chemical analyses and they are doing biotesting... No-one seems to be monitoring and/or reporting heavy metals, though. If you (anyone) runs across any info on the Australian culprit (Esmeralda Exploration), that might be interesting - a version that slipped briefly in local press was that there was a criminal neglect in protection procedures. Off-list would be great, too! Might be proper-ganda, but experts over here say dilution will have eliminated any major consequences for the lower Danube... Thanks again! Elena, 200 (maybe less) metres away from the beautiful Danube
