How about a book on both? "Butter and Guns : America's Cold War Economic Diplomacy, " by Diane B. Kunz, Free Press, 1997. What's her rep?

On this thread, saw a new book by Chalmers Johnson the other day. "Blowback: The Costs & Consequences of American Empire." Thought I had him pegged as a conventional Cold Warrior (from "Revolutionary Change, " a RANDish study, looks like one of those how to avoid and build up counter-revolutionary capabilities and capacities tomes. The usual polisci blather about resource deprivation bla bla bla, am I wrong about this work or other's in it's vein? Also his early work, "Peasant Nationalism and Communist China.") Anyway, this book is blurbed by Bruce Cumings, John Dower, Richard Barnet. Annotated biblio cites G. Arighhi, "The Long 20th Century, " from Verso and other leftish sources.

Finally on Guns and Butter, remember the John Heartfield artwork with Hitler with a belly full of gold and silver coins? Or his "The Real Meaning Of The Hitler Salute, " Hitler with upraised open palm towards the sky accepting cash from taller Mr. Money Bags Bourgeoisie from Above. Where are The Masses cartoonists like Robert Minor when you need them? Wouldn't The Masses and The New Masses have had a field day with Clinton and Reagan and Bush and Johnson? Only Ralph Steadman (???) comes close. Or the artist that used to work for The Atlantic and Ramparts. ______Sorel?
