> Liberation theology, incidentally, has its source not in theology but in
the actual liberation movements of latin america -- when christians turn
radical they simply twist their theology around to fit their politics.
Marsha Hewitt has an excellent analysis of this - From Theology to Social Theory: Juan Luis Segundo and the Theology of Liberation (New York: Peter Lang, 1990). Hewitt illustrates the influence of non-theologians on theologians: Bateson, Freud, Weber, Lenin, Luckacs, and Marx. In the intro she writes, "Segundo is one of the few theologians - if not the only one - who has implicitly addressed the issue of what happens to theology when it makes a serious attempt to become itself a practical, emancipatory social theory and practice."
