'Hanoi Jane' finds the Lord Martin Kettle in Washington
Conservative speculation is mounting that Jane Fonda, for 30 years a hate figure of the American right, has become a born-again Christian.
Internet and now newspaper reports claim the woman they once called "Hanoi Jane" for her embrace of the Vietnamese cause in the 1960s now regularly attends church services and Bible study.
Fonda has refused to talk to the press about her private life since the announcement earlier this month of her separation from her husband, CNN founder Ted Turner. But a friend was quoted as saying the conversion was "very real, very deep". And the pastor of the church she attends said: "I am extremely impressed with the genuineness and sincerity in her search for spirituality and wholeness."
Fonda appears to have gone from chic sex symbol, to radical anti-war icon, to workout video queen, to caring capitalist, to born-again Christian during her 62 years.
Friends of Mr Turner have said his unhappiness with her new-found Christian faith was one of the principal reasons for their separation. He has been an outspoken critic of the Christian church for many years, calling it "a religion for losers" and ridiculing the Pope.
