Candidates who are so identical for practical purposes tend to act as Rorschach (sp?) Ink Blots. People project their own politics on to them. Liberals by definition must vote for someone, regardless of available candidates. If Mussoline were running against Goering, there would be a wide preference for Mussolini among liberal intellectuals. But liberal intellectuals are also herd animals. So if an influential one found a progressive spot in Goering, they would all switch to him.

By about 2012 Mussolini *will* be running against Goering for the Democratic nomination. Both will be seen by the NYT as too far to the left.
