Such views are not much different from those shared by most immigrant
communities in this country - which desperately try to be more "american"
than native-born US-ers, hence:
- staunchly conservative on social issues
- bigoted (anti-feminist, anti-gay, racist, anti-communist)
- zealously religious
- staunchly opposed to education (or at least disdainful of it)
- materialistic, pro-business, anti-tax and anti social welfare
- ardently supporting the police and the law-and-order politicians like il
duce Giuliani who is

  a hero of most NYC immigrant communities.

such views are widely spread in the developing world and tend to be
strengthened by emigration.  Far from being purveyors of "revolutionary
consciousness", the Third world and Eastern European immigrants to the US
tend to be more reactionary, more pettit-bourgeois, and more anxious to
vote Republican than an "average" US-er, especially on the East or the West
Coast.

amen to wojtek, although i would temper the "opposed to education" or "zealously
religious" part.  the question is how do their kids turn out?
i usually have a recurring argument with my folks about the issues above.
that's the thanks they get for sending me to business school for a good
capitalist education on the wonders of finance and economics.
