FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Chris Lehane January 25, 2000 615-340-3251 STATEMENT FROM GLORIA STEINEM I'm happy to see the two major Democratic candidates debating over who is more pro-choice, because it proves two facts. First, the huge majority of Americans believe that the abortion decision should be made by a woman and her doctor. Second, the Republican Presidential nomination is in the hands of anti-choice extremists who don't represent the majority of even their own party. Still, it isn't fair or helpful to suggest that our courageously pro-choice Vice President should have reached that decision even longer ago than he did. I'm happy to have endorsed Al Gore for President, and I hope that Bill Bradley, someone I also respect, will not discourage others from becoming pro-choice by the idea that change at any time is not welcome. ###
