That's a 500$ raise per year for 1/2 or more of humanity....

No doubt.  But the point of reference for the thread
was equality around some specification of 'basic
needs.'  Presumably 'basic needs' do not differ
by race or nationality, so equality in this realm
is pretty daunting.  Improvement is not, partly
because the starting point is so abysmal.
