24/7/00

Dear friends of Social Justice and the Reconciliation Process, The Swan Valley Nyungahs and the wider Bassendean Community need your urgent support to stop the W.A. Government desecrating one of the most important indigenous sites of significance in the Perth Metropolitan area.

Plans for a prison where the Bennett Brook meets the Swan river and on land adjacent to the Swan Valley Nyungah Community have led us to appeal under the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Protection Act of 1984 for protection of the site know as Pyrton.

Perth lawyer Peter Marks was appointed by Federal Heritage Minister Robert Hill to investigate and report on the Pyrton prison proposal and his findings were clear.

Yes, the Pyrton Site is significant. Yes, it should be protected. Yes, a prison would be a desecration. Yes, there is no avenue for protection under W.A. state law. & Yes, the Minister (Hill) should make a declaration to protect the Pyrton Site using his powers under the Commonwealth Act.

See Web site for relevant Federal Government press release. http://environment.gov.au/minister/env/2000/mr30jun400.html

Please let the Federal Government know that you are watching them on this issue. Mr Hill has received many calls for action but he continues to defer this most important decision. The WA Ministry of Justice has only agreed to stop work on the proposed prison until Friday, July 28.

Please take the time to e-mail Senator's office at lucinda.schmidt at ea.gov.au

or phone his office at 02 62777640 to demonstrate at this unprecedented action to site a prison on a registered Aboriginal site of significance. If you wouldn't mind, please CC you email to: pyrton at hotmail.com , senator.ridgeway at aph.gov.au , senator.herron at aph.gov.au , senator.brown at aph.gov.au , senator.faulkner at aph.gov.au , senator.harradine at aph.gov.au , senator.stottdespoja at aph.gov.au , senator.lees at aph.gov.au , Kim.Beazley.MP at aph.gov.au , Stephen.Smith.MP at aph.gov.au , John.Anderson.MP at aph.gov.au

Thankyou. For more information call the Swan Valley Nyungah Community: 08 93773550 Or Pyrton Action Group: 08 92796781
