Compared to the past 11 presidential election cycles, Federal Reserve policy has been exceptionally tight in 1999-2000. After raising interest rates 75 basis points in March and May, the Fed is now tightening even faster that Paul Volcker did in the inflation-fighting campaign of 1979-1980 that sank Jimmy Carter's reelection bid.
