Jason Goodwin, *Lords of the Horizons: A History of the Ottoman Empire*,
just out in paperback from Holt, was praised by the NYT and WSJ.

I would second Andy English's suggestion that the section on "The House of
Islam" (about the Ottomans), with the long note on "The `Asiatic Mode of
Production'", from Perry Anderson's quarter-century-old *Lineages of the
Absolutist State*, although criticized, remains unsurpassed.
