I've often wondered just how great a proportion of Russian equipment came from the U.S. -- given the high degree of success the Germans had in destroying convoys to Murmansk. I once spoke to a person who had been an "enemy alien" during the war and give the choice of detention camp or shipping out in the Merchant Marine. He was on a convoy of 95 ships -- 5 of which made it back to New York. He switched his choice to detention.
