That started me thinking about how Hemingway defined fascism.
I paged through my copy of the complete short stories of Hemingway. I came across a gem of a story that the publisher of the collection thought described Hemigway's take on Mussolini's Italy. The story is called "Che Ti Dice La Patria". It's about a ten day car trip.
To sum it up for you. The fascists had attracted a polite young man on the go. Mussolini had closed the brothels, which then became restaurants. A fascist cop on a bicycle gave him a traffic ticket for having a dirty license plate number. He wished he had more than ten days.
