PONCHAI KAMAU WILKERSON Must Not DIE IN VAIN!

On Tuesday, March 14 , 2000 in Huntsville, Texas at 6:00pm representatives from The National Black United Front (NBUF) will make a public statement concerning the scheduled execution of Ponchai “Kamau” Wilkerson and the White Supremacist application of the Death Penalty Texas. In addition, NBUF will highlight the devastating impact that the “Criminal Justice” system has on the African-American community with nearly 1 million Black people incarcerated across the U.S.

On February 21-22, 2000 Kamau Wilkerson and Howard Guidry held a prison guard hostage for 13 hours calling specifically on NBUF and other grassroots organizations from the African-American community to hear the following concerns: 1) A moratorium on the Death Penalty in Texas 2) conditions of sensory deprivation on death row 3) white supremacist and class driven application of the death penalty 4) lack of proper legal counsel for death row inmates 5) lack of consideration for innocent people on death row. The guard was released unharmed after community representatives spoke directly to Wilkerson and Guidry.

ACTIVIST JAILED FOR SPEAKING OUT IN COURT

The outspoken anti-death penalty activist and NBUF member Njeri Shakur was sentenced to 30 days in jail for contempt of court on March 8 , 2000. Shakur has been one of the most ardent supporters of Kamau Wilkerson. Shakur attended a court proceeding with Wilkerson and stood up and demanded that Kamau’s statement be heard amidst guards attacking him. Elder NBUF member Jean Wilkins Dember visited Shakur Monday, March 13, 2000 and reported her spirit to be high and defiant urging the Black community to "Wake up and take a stand against the legal slavery of the “Criminal Justice System in Texas and Amerikkka”".

Call Governor Bush and demand a stay of execution for Ponchai Wilkerson (512) 637-2000!
