The NY Times is peerless when it takes on the big issues of political economy. From an article in today's issue by David Stout on Horst Köhler, managing director-designate of the IMF:

"The fund was founded in 1946 to promote economic stability around the world, partly through loans to countries in need. From time to time, it has been accused of straying from its original mission and trying ineffectually to bring about profound social changes."

"From time to time." "Straying." "Ineffectually." The Onion couldn't do better than this.
