The FT calls her "centre-right," which is caught my eye. It's not surprising anymore to hear things like this from the far right. But if this is considered a representative view from the centre-right, that's something. So does anyone know anything about her career and views?

>From Friday's FT, reporting from the EU special summit in Lisbon:

"A philosophical divide between France and other EU member states was apparent at the start of yesterday's talks when Nicole Fontaine, the centre-right president of the European Parliament, called for restrictions on corporate takeovers on social grounds.

Addressing the leaders she said the people of Euorpe were "scandalized by untrammeled capitalism." Mrs. Fontaine, a French national, said "relocations, social dumping, ruthless exploitation of the disparities between the social and fiscal legislation of member states and remorseless pursuit of profit at the expense of working men and women have a direct and traumatic impact on their lives."
