One related thing--trivial at first blush but probably quite indicative of class formation--that seems to have happened during the 1980s, alongside the quantitative and qualitative expansion of a globally-mobile bourgeoisie, was that many countries which earlier prohibited dual citizenship changed policy. Most importantly, the yanks, for instance.

South Africa has had some high-profile cases of people who lived in exile during apartheid taking out other citizenships, and returning but still travelling on their second passport (like the speaker of parliament).
