What's your source for the Vietnamese government being "vicious gang labour bosses" (albeit that it seems vicious has been dropped now?). I'm an occasional visitor to Vietnam (the darling Tess is out there right now), and I don't recognise this. The nearest thing to vicious labour gangs I've seen were the scrap metal hunters in the DMZ, who were not run by the government.
"Sorrow of War" is a great book. I bought my copy from a bloke who uses a modified skateboard to get around these days.
