`Over 80% of Japanese in 30s fret over jobs'
TOKYO: Mirroring the nation's worsening employment situation, a newspaper
survey published on Wednesday shows 84 per cent of Japanese in their 30s are
worried about their jobs or those of family members.
The results of the survey, conducted on April 15-16, compare with 78 per
cent in that age group who expressed job anxiety in a similar one conducted
in May last year, the Yomiuri Shimbun said.
The survey also found 82 per cent of people in their 40s and 78 per cent of
those in their 50s expressed similar worries about employment.
Among concerns cited by respondents include cuts in income, health problems
such as overwork, possible layoffs, the difficulty of finding a job and
corporate bankruptcy, the report said.
The poll by Japan's largest mass-circulation daily covered 1,918 eligible
voters picked randomly from across the country.
Japan's unemployment rate rose to a record 4.9 per cent in February as the
total number of jobless totalled 3.27 million, up 4.5 per cent from the same
month last year. The government will announce statistics for March on
Friday.
Analysts have said unemployment will likely increase in Japan, which is
struggling to emerge from its worst economic downturn in over half a
century.(AP)
