I saw Huggy Bear in the basement of an art gallery in St. Paul back in, oh, whatever, 94? I couldn't understand a word of what they were shouting due to the makeshift P.A. I only had one of their records, the "Her Jazz" e.p. But, I felt that call-to-action radiating from the corner (no stage) of the tiny, packed room, and I took it out with me. "Pop" as a site for detournement, also an upgrade on the-personal-is-the-political 4.0

Like Dylan's "play it fuckin' loud!" in response to the catcalls of "Judas" etc in, um, 64, this, for "my generation," did much to expose the lie of the much tauted and all-too-inhuman distinction between "cultural" and "political" activism.

Cornershop, by the way, has ALWAYS been about a "space clearing gesture." That was what the meta-critique of John Lydon was all about in their first single, and jibes with "Reclaiming Looted Uniforms," et al.
