They were ordinary people. Mencken is one of those interesting right-wing slobs who has lots of interesting things to say -- and says them very well -- but is still, at bottom, a reactionary slob. His diatribes against the South are wonderful for skewing things that were pretty obnoxious about the south -- but one always has the feeling that what he objected to in lynch mobs was not that they lynched people but that they had bad style. Pound admired him -- primarily because he hated Roosevelt.
