below is from a debate at another list, politics, where a guy professing to be an expert maintains that he never heard of them. je maintained that he'd never heard of them and that they didn't even exist. i got fed up at his ignorance and laziness and insistence on claiming that the CNO didn't exist and was nothing . so, i got carried away with a web search.

the was an article at salon in march or february that featured a discussion of the CNP.

whether it's a conspiracy, well some folks certainly think so. frankly what's interesting about it is that the web search revealed just how divided the conservative party is by the internecine politics of the religious right.

AND SALLY, check this out: http://www.population-security.org/24-CH16.html#4

it traces the CNP to baptist splits over papal policy back in mid 70s. i find this whole internecine battling among chrsitans stuff pretty interesting... I wish i hadn't lent out my books on the relig right and social movements. i'm sure there'd be more on this. is this history in the book, the Hunting of the pres? anyway, the link refers to a bill moyer's interview....

the rest, below, are most of the links i found that made ref to the CNP in one way or another. orgs with vitae of members listing their affiliation with CNP, for ex. there are a number of home schooling groups listing them for various reasons. anti clinton sites with a list of groups the Clinton admin has harrassed. they audited the CNP b/c they are getting special org status.

it appears that the group is a think tank, that's it's official status. there's a good article, link below, addressing the issue of how relig cons. think tanks operate and the role they play in policy making. it also appears that it is though enough of to include as part of several resumes listed on line by both individuals, corps, and groups whose invited spekaers they advertise as members of the "prestigious" CNP. so, i guess it isn't quite as unimportant for some folks as some in this discussion would like us to believe. __________________________________ 1. this seems to be an early print reference in mainstream media

Newsweek Magazine reports that CNP's first executive director, Louisiana State Representative Woody Jenkins, told members, "I predict that one day before the end of this century the Council (meaning the CNP) will be so influential that no President, regardless of party or philosophy, will be able to ignore us or our concerns or shut us out of the highest levels of government."

"Children's education controlled by parents Instead of arguing about how much more money should be assigned to the Federal role in education - on which more than $75 billion per year are now misdirected, we can and should eliminate completely the Federal role - every penny of which is expended in violation of our First Amendment rights to "liberty of conscience". Most grass-roots Republicans favor parental control of education, but the Republican Party in Congress has voted even more spending on education than Clinton himself requested. Gary Bauer of the Family Research Council reports that his "friend and colleague" Jim Dobson was speaking to a group of conservative leaders at the Council for National Policy (CNP) meeting in Phoenix, Arizona. In an emotional speech, delivered without notes, Dr Dobson gave "voice to the frustration felt by millions of pro-family and pro-life Americans because of the lack of progress on our agenda." Bauer says "we face a liberal est ablishment, led by President Clinton, that constantly blocks attempts we make to bring the country back to its moral foundations and the beliefs of our Founding Fathers." The speech was off the record but was leaked and reported on by the `New York Times' on 12 February. The New York Times highlighted Dobson's threat to leave the Republican Party and "take as many people with me as possible."

(this one's really weird. clinton appoints a CNP member .... under pressure from Trent Lott. hmmmm)

News Summary for Week of June 23, 1997 TWO REPUBLICANS NOMINATED FOR FEC In a story on June 25, the ASSOCIATED PRESS reported that President Clinton announced his intention to nominate two Republican FEC commissioners to fill a pair of GOP vacancies on the Federal Election Commission. The six members of the FEC are evenly divided between Democrats and Republicans. Two other spots on the panel, both Democratic positions, are vacant. M.D.B. "Margot" Carlisle and Darryl R. Wold were nominated to replace two FEC commissioners, one whose term expired in April 1995 and the other who resigned in October 1995. Carlisle, the former chief of staff for Sen. Thad Cochran (R-Miss) has worked for the Heritage Foundation, served as assistant secretary for legislative affairs for the Department of Defense and is the former executive director for the Council for National Policy. Wold, a Californian, is a private attorney specializing in business and election law.

The AP story noted that "both candidates were suggested by Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott, R-Miss, who earlier this month warned Clinton he would block Senate action on all presidential nominations except for the military until all FEC vacancies were filled." <...>
