The following letter was printed in last Sunday's edition of The Manhattan Mercury of Manhattan, Kansas. This is a very Republican town, and the newspaper reflects that. The writer is a senior at the local high school.

"Jostens has much to celebrate at high school graduation time"

To the Editor:

Before I graduate, I want to salute my favorite high school memorabilia company, Jostens.

First off, I really like your rings. I have seen other students wearing them and have noticed that they come in many colors. And I once heard you telling the sophomore class meeting that if your rings turned our fingers green, we'd be upgraded to the next level of quality. How considerate! I also really like the other stuff that you sell as well, like T-shirts, boxer shorts and all the other kinds of equipment you need to graduate. My absolute favorite is your graduating class commemorative beer stein. All the names of my fellow seniors are on the stein, so I won't forget them even if I happen to be a little tipsy. It'll be great for when I get sloshed after the graduation shindig my parents are throwing for me.

All this stuff is good and fine, but I think you are missing out on some select items that would greatly enhance, if not revolutionize, your sales and your image. First off, how about an MHS senior class Zippo lighter? Blue and white with a logo on the side that reads, "Senior Class Rules!" I think you'd find they'd sell as a nice complement to the stein. Finally, but certainly not least: the MHS roach clip, cigarette papers and/or Class of 2000 pipes. Maybe you could put our Indian mascot on there somewhere, like a peace pipe! With these items your sales would really boom! All the proceeds mights go for a Jostens scholarship. How much stuff would I have to buy to qualify?

Jostens, you're my favorite memorabilia company because, quite frankly, I don't know of any other. Your success is bolstered by the monopoly you hold at MHS. Our school welcomes you with open arms the way it does no civic organization or academic enhancement program. You capitalize on America's youth the way no other corporation is allowed. For that, you will always hold a special place in my heart.

Sally Oviatt MHS Senior
