Waiting for Stalingrad

anyone here ever read walter karp's book indispensable enemies? it's a long
essay on the collusion of the two political parties, and its underlying
thesis is that what matters most to political bosses is not a matter of
winning or losing elections but of maintaining their own hegemony over the
party hierarchy--which means, above all else, keeping mavericks and
newcomers out of the mix. i agree with max: this is not about a marketplace
of ideas in which dlc neoliberalism is about to lose ground. it's about the
political control of the party itself (and, as always, the interests of the
party's principal funders, who after all *made* these folks the center of
the party).

. . .
One thing I'm definitely looking forward to, assuming that Gore is indeed
defeated, is the elimination of the Democratic Leadership Council as a
significant force in U.S. politics. The DLC's centrist strategy will be
completely discredited. Carl
Forget it. They ain't going away. If Gore loses
they will chalk it up to his individual shortcomings,
his populist vibrations, and, if possible, the Nader
effect.
They'll be around as long as the center is where
the votes are.
