In the actually existing political for 24 years, through every administration progressive policy after progressive policy has been weakened or destroyed. There is absolutely *no* evidence that this trend will change under either a Democratic or a Republican administration. The most that the advocates of Gore can claim is that the erosion will be slightly slower under his administration.

What a dismal prospect. Katha's argument is one of utter despair. She has surrendered all hope of actual improvement in the condition of women, blacks, single mothers, workers in general, and is willing in desperation to settle for a slightly slower destruction of decency in the u.s. And she calls Yoshie's hope for popular mobilization naive! But any other policy is simply hoping for devine intervention in the Democratic Party. It won't happen. I cannot think of a more hopeless naivete than hope in the Democrats.
