Fantasy, mostly, compounded by habit. Voters generally have little or no idea what positions the candidates actually take. Serious, smart people seem to think, for example, that Hillary's some sort of social democrat. Look at the exit poll breakdown on abortion - about a quarter of Gore voters were pro-lifers, and about a third of Bush's were pro-choice. But to NARAL, the difference was black and white. The Vanishing Voter people did a survey recently showing that the public basically had no idea what Bush and Gore were campaigning on.
