Is it reactionary to point out that urban Democratic machines often legitimate themselves with black liberals even though the real powers behind them are the usual gang of financiers and developers? Stanley Hill's people made a similar racial defense of their regime, even though they'd completely sold out their largely black and Latino membership. In the words that Dinkins used to reassure a Wall Street audience that he'd have no problem cutting the NYC budget, "Don't worry, they'll take it from me."
