Elderly Hippies For Gore

I was driving through downtown Ann Arbor this afternoon when chants of "We
Want Gore!" nearly drowned out the Biggie Smalls tape I had blasting my car
speakers. I pulled over to witness a couple dozen Gore supporters waving
"Scrap the Electoral College!" and "Gore: Man of the People" placards. I'd
say two-thirds of the crowd were U of Mich students, so their participation
can be chalked up to youthful exuberance. But the rest were aging hippies,
decked out in peasant dresses, faded bells and the inevitable Birkenstocks.
I saw one flower senior, his long ponytail completely gray, holding a sign
toward traffic that read, "Honk if you love Gore!" Was this an ex-Nader
supporter who, in the heat of our national crisis, had turned to pimping for
Al and Joe? I couldn't tell. But I was happy to hear few horns honking, even
though Gore had won the state.
