DaimlerChrysler Chairman Juergen Schrempp, left, is expected to make the ouster of Chrysler Group President James P. Holden, right, final on Friday. Former Chrysler Chairman Robert Eaton, second from left, let Holden's predecessor, Thomas Stallkamp, second from right, go last year.

FRANKFURT, Germany -- The ouster of Chrysler Group President James P. Holden, expected to be made official Friday, may have been one of the few options left for Juergen Schrempp.

With the celebrated merger that created DaimlerChrysler AG steadily unraveling amid losses in North America and executive defections, the decision by Schrempp, DaimlerChrysler's chairman, to make Dieter Zetsche Chrysler's third boss in two years signals Chrysler's troubles are far more serious than thought.

Internal estimates show the Auburn Hills-based automaker is on track to post losses of hundreds of millions next year, if not more, contradicting recent public statements. And orders from dealers have slowed to such a point that more production shutdowns may be ordered by year-end. To compensate, Chrysler has asked employees to order new company cars and return their leased ones by the end of the year.

When the UAW Legal dept offered me a summer job when I was in law school, the person in charge called back to ask, what kind of car do you have? I said, I have an American Toyota made by nonunion labor in Kentucky and a Japanese Colt made by Mitsubishi union labor in Japan. They have great big AMERICA WORKS BESE WHEN WE SAY UNION YES bumper stickers on them. I'll probably bring the Colt to Detroit. She said, "I'll put down 'Dodge.'" --jks
