Subject: N30 Statement (Pls. Forward)
Reclaim our Streets! Reclaim our Future!
N30 is the day of international solidarity against corporate globalization!
(N30 Statement of the NO to WTO/Peoples Assembly)
One year ago, tens of thousands of people converged on the streets of Seattle to say "No" the business as usual of corporate globalization.
Individuals, groups, families, youth, workers, and peoples organizations from the global south united in their opposition to a system of globalization that keeps millions of people in abject poverty, homeless, hungry, sick and with little other recourse than to say NO!
"NO" to a system that exploits workers while increasing the profits of the few transnational corporations.
"NO" to an institution that protects the rights of corporations over some governments and overturns every environmental and community health and labor standards because they are an inconvenience and threaten the profit margins of multinational corporations.
November 30 1999 was not a day in isolation. It was a day that marked a resurgence of organized and militant resistance to corporate globalization. It was a day when the World Trade Organization, by the sure will and determination of the people and a series of coordinated and spontaneous actions from a broad range of progressive political forces, prevented the World Trade Organization Ministerial meeting from conducting its deadly business as usual.
Seattle was inspired by powerful and successful peoples actions against APEC (Asia Pacific Economic Summit) in Manila, Vancouver, and Malaysia in `1996, 1997 and 1998 respectively..
Seattle, in turn, served as a catalyst to ignite the fire of global resistance to capital with inspiring and successful actions against the IMF/WB in Washington DC and Prague (Czech Republic); World Economic Forum in Davos Switzerland and Melbourne, Australia; and the G8 Meeting in Tokyo, Japan. All these actions challenged the system of increasing exploitation of people and natural resources and is being met with increasing reisstance and militance.
In nearly every case, the overlords of monopoly capitalism had to run home with their heads hung and their tails between their legs when facing the will and determination of the people whose daily lives are impacted by these institutions.
These institutions serve but one purpose to help secure the footing of the monopoly capitalists and the transnational corporations. The footing is secured and the profits are protected with increased militarism and war.
The overlords of monopoly capitalism are the perpetuators of the same institutions that sanction war and increased militarism, abject poverty and suffocating debt to be placed on countries in the global south.
The basic human rights of food, housing, health care, education, and the right to a sustaining livelihhod are ignored and violated whenever profits are threatened. For the people to survive the debt placed on them Must not simply be forgiven. It was not a debt they wished in the first place. The debt must be cancelled!
Education, health care are quickly becoming privatized. Medications, food and health care are becoming commodified. They are not seen as necessities for surivival, but as rewards for countries who allow themselves to be
subjugated by corporate globalization. Those countries resisting globalization are threatened with sanctions. As a result, life-saving medications like those to treat the HIV virus which is killing thousands of people are not allowed to meet those in need. The path of corporate globalization is the path of greater wealth to a few. It is the path of increased competition and commodification of natural resources and further degradation of the environment.
While the capitalists fight wars to ensure and protect their interests in oil, land, and minerals; there will soon be new wars to protect the precious commodity of water--essential for life. Many things we value, the air we breathe, the water drink, the land we live and even our work have become commodified in the era of globalization. They are seen as commodities that can be traded, bargained and further exploited.
The WTO did not leave Seattle on November 30. Its tentacles and values are all pervasive. The people's movement against corporate globalization did not leave Seattle either. The Peoples Assembly and other progressive forces have remained vigilant in our opposition to the WTO and other institutions put forth by the US and the corporate elite. Globalization is not the sole preserve of capital. We are fighting of the globalization of human rights, healthcare, education and the right to a safe job that pays a living wage to support one's family.
We vow to confront the beast that has taken away our lands and livelihoods. and has displaced, commodified and turned women into modern day slaves. We must stop the system of genocidal wars against the impoverished in this country and end corporate intervention and domination on the people of the world. We call an end to the economic blockades, bombing and sanctions to bring sovereign nations to heel.
Our resolve in standing united against corporate globalization can and must go beyond this international day of solidarity.
Last year they tried to silence our voices and suppress our democratic rights to assemble and speak. Last year our resistance was met with random police violence. We will not go back. It's time to reclaim the streets and reclaim our lives!
