Census Bureau Releases Profile of the Nation's
Foreign-Born Population
The Commerce Department's Census Bureau today released a four-page Census Brief profiling the nation's foreign-born population.
The brief, titled Coming to America: A Profile of the Nation's Foreign-Born, provides analysis and graphics on the demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of the nation's foreign-born residents. Specifically, it examines their numerical growth and settlement patterns, and how different foreign-born groups compare with one another, as well as with the rest of the population. Comparisons cover a variety of topics, such as educational attainment, occupation, poverty, income and household size.
Also released today were two related briefs, one profiling the nation's Latin American-born population; the other, the Asian-born population. The briefs are based on a report issued previously by the Census Bureau titled Profile of the Foreign-Born Population in the United States: 1997.
The data come from the 1997 Current Population Survey. Statistics from this survey are subject to sampling and nonsampling error.
