There was an article in slate today about this (http://slate.msn.com/HeyWait/00-10-02/HeyWait.asp).

The author claimed that the commentators deliberately stall for 30 minutes, until the poll results are in. This saves them from looking 'foolish' (where 'foolish' = 'against the polls').

However, he missed the trick that somebody here pointed out, of polling people before the debate, and getting their opinion afterwards, to reduce bias.
