I'm actually trying to write an article on Neon Genesis: Evangelion, which'll deal with the whole Japanese anime scene. There's depressingly little written on the stuff, though -- mainstream video critique is almost as shockingly obsolescent as mainstream economics. In a nutshell, anime is tremendously diverse -- there's the multinational good, the neo-national bad, and the corporate keiretsu ugly. DBZ is actually pretty wholesome, and teaches some positive lessons about respect for other cultures, the importance of friendship, etc. (though it also has some noxious sexism).
