Which AG? Al Gore or Allan Greenspan?
Probably both supported it, though I
don't remember who did or said what.
I did think and still do that this episode
was a good test of the political support for
environmentalism, one which found it severely
lacking. You had two good reasons for supporting
the BTU tax, by conventional reasoning -- green
priorities and deficit reduction. It got stomped.
mbs *******
I like Brad's claim, but yeah, I meant Greenspan.
I agree that it was a test that enviro's failed to pass. On the other hand, the level of brain shifting it will take to persuade people that green issues aren't elitist anymore has gone down somewhat, while the recent debate over the inheritance tax shows who the real elitists are to a whole new generation that have pretty darn good bullshit detectors. Perhaps the time is approaching for revenue-neutral tax shift debates to begin anew, given the level of innovation and R&D that need to be done to get us out of the mess we're in with the rest of the planet's systems.
