I have a friend, very sensible guy, used to be in the CP, but no dogmatist; he did go on a (Party-sponsored) trip to NK, said there was little or no real supervision, or it was easy to slip the leash. Course he knew no Korean. But he was impressed, given the general East-Bloc-iness of it all, especially compared to the Philippines, where he had been. This was some time ago, maybe 15 years ago. --jks

<< The last words of the NY Times obit:

"The world should see that North Korea has done," Mr. Hall said. "In many ways, it's a miracle."

"If you want to take a nice vacation, take it in North Korea."

Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never has, and it never will. If there is no struggle, there is no progress. Those who profess to favor freedom, and yet deprecate agitation are men who want crops without plowing the ground. They want rain without thunder and lightening. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its waters. -- Frederick Douglass --
