In my vocabulary, 'hick' and 'redneck' are two much different animals. A 'hick' is a rural type who lacks formal education and urban manners - not necessarily a bad thing, given the state of the higher education industry in this country. A 'redneck' is an arrogant, cocky asshole - he (it is usuallly a male) might have some formal education or even an MBA but he is openly anti-intellectual, anti-urban, and anti-liberal; synonyms: jock, frat-boy, asshole, Republican

Moreover, educated types are more likely to be bigots than hicks, thet are just better at hiding it. The reason for that is making distinctions among groups, forming hierarchies (especially meritocratic ones) and judging people by their credentials is the quintessence of university-based education.

I never said that machismo is caused by guns. I said it is a part of the cult of violence that permeates this country's collective consciousness and expresses itself, among other things, through fetishistic attitudes toward guns. That fetishistic attitude, btw can be either desire for power (cf. the protagonist of the film "taxi driver") or revulsion expressed by much of the liberal establishement you criticize.
