Actually, there is a serious discussion among activists and theorists about the difference between using the term homophobia or heterosexism. Similar to the debate over anti-Semitism v. antisemitism. Do we replicate errors and perpetuate problems in our language? Sure! Kelley is talking about what Rene Girard calls "mimetic scapegoating" I scapegaot you, so you scapegoat me back.
See new theoretical model in the new anthology, "Readings for Diversity and Social Justice."
>From Amazon blurb:
"he first reader to cover the scope of oppressions in America, Readings for Diversity and Social Justice will cover the six "isms": racism, sexism, anti-Semitism, heterosexism, classism and ableism. The Reader will contain a mix of short personal and theoretical essays and will be designed as an introduction to the topics at hand. There will be an introductory section and six "ism" sections, each of which will be broken down into three divisions: Key Concepts and Historical and Social Context; Voices; and Next Steps and Action. The selections will include writings from some of the foremost names in the field-bell hooks, Cornel West, Michael Omi, Audre Lorde, Gloria Anzaldua, Michelle Fine and many other distinguished scholars."
