For those of you who took any interest in the controversy over TWA 800, there's an interesting piece by Elaine Scarry, the former FAA official, in the latest New York Review of Books. She suggests that the last three major crashes originating at JFK--TWA 800, Swissair 111, and EgyptAir 990--may all have been victims of electromagnetic interference, possibly traceable to military training ops on either side of the jfk flight corridor.
One intriguing factoid: The TWA and Swissair flights both left JFK on Wednesday evenings at exactly 8:19 p.m.--making it plausible, Scarry hints, that they were both victims of EMI that had its source in some regularly scheduled military exercise.
