Nah, not quite - were that the case, the things themselves wouldn't be so quickly expendable in favor of yet other things. What's actually going on is the things mediate relations between people in a complex set of transactions.

Except the expendability of the things , to some extent, supports my point in that it means that the relationship with the things is of a lesser quality than the relationship with people would be. If the thing were unexpendable like a person, then the quality of the relationship would be more like that with a human to that extent and the alienation less.
