J.G.Landels *Engineering in the Ancient World* (University of California Press) 1978. A classicist not an engineer & it's a bit eclectic (for instance lots on catapults & water pumps and not much on roads or construction). But a good read.
K.D.White *Greek and Roman Technology* (Cornell University Press) 1984. A big (octavo) beautiful book. And K.D.White is both classicist and technically minded historian (author of the truly great *Roman Farming*). Best intro possible on the subject. Has all the civil engineering and mining left out by Landels.
