Ironic Yoshie cites Burke. Remember the (well I wasn't there, only read about it!), the savaging he took from Michael Gold et. al. at the Congress of American Writers in '32 or '33 for suggesting that "the people" rather than "the proletariat" would be more effective agit-prop. Premature Popular Frontism! See Daniel Aaron, "Writers on the Left, " reprint with preface by Alan Wald, the Alan Wald volume, "The N.Y. Intellectuals, " Judy Kutulas volume of a few yrs. ago on the anti-Stalinist intelligentsia (lotsa new archival material). The memoir by Malcolm Cowley from the late 70s, is also good. Haven't read the book on Burke by Frank Lentricchia though. Michael Pugliese
