Anyone know if this is also true for the other distros out there (Debian, etc.)? -- Dennis

FreeBSD probably doesn't count here, but for the record they have consistantly improved in details and hardware recognition. XF86Config, the base X-window system has improved too. It's a little easier to set up. I installed the latest distribution (4.2) in December. The four CD set was 39.95. My only complaint was the extra security packages that are installed by default which make you set up ftp, rlogin, telnet and some of the network protocols manually and choose the security level. That makes sense for commercial servers but is pretty ridiculous for lone boxes like mine. I never keep anything I really want on the computer for very long anyway---either print it out or throw it away.
The other complaint is that some of the packages, particularly the typesetting things from GNU, like TeX are not on the CD's. That might mean there is some movement toward commericalizing the TeX systems or just mean there wasn't room and they were not that popular. Who knows.
