Services such as broadband may be essential these days to companies. If so, companies need to manage their critical suppliers. CFOs and Operations Managers need to pay attention to the basics of running a company, which always includes being on top of your suppliers. There were probably plenty of warning signs that NorthPoint (or DSL) is a risky service today. Where are the business continuation plans? Where are the second source prospects? (When the Trust company that managed my IRA account sent customers notices saying their accounts were now frozen because the cash was missing, I was more than surprised. But guess what, there was plenty of information in the public domain that showed Enforcement Actions in two previous years and that Intrust's cash management approach was non-standard and risky and should be changed. Who was following up (including the media)? I could have investigated my own custodian's background further... simply)
I fully agree that more regulation is essential in the horse shit free market that we've all been signed up to, BUT there are also steps that prudent individuals and business people can always take if we can just not get too caught up in the hype ourselves. -Steve Grube
