Scarcity-----Nanotechnolgy will end it

Yes, I remember reading this somewhere, and smiling. Maybe it was Eric
Drexler in "Nanothecnology" ("father" of nanotechnology) or Michio Kaku in
"Visions".
It's not that the technical advance is out of the question, it should
certainly be possible to rearrange the atoms to create whatever complex
needs we acquire (similarly to how an enzyme does in in cells). The thing
that amused me was the conclusion about the social consequences. The future
would be something like the image of a wealthy surburban american street,
quiet, empty, no-one needing to go out for anything etc. As if, with
effectly limitless wealth, we couldn't think of anything better to aspire to
than to do than play games.

In the not too distant future, nanotechnology will eradicate scarcity.
Imagine being able to pour carbon into an assembler--or whatever you want to
call it--and out comes diamonds, gold, or anything else.
Also, there will be no more work and no more money. What will most people do
with their time? They will play games. We are in the information age today.
Nanotechnology will change that. We will pass from the information society
and into the "entertainment society."
