TRADE PROTESTERS PEACEFUL, BUT SHUT DOWN PEACE BRIDGE
(AP) Protesters at the US Canadian border near Buffalo
began to disperse Sunday afternoon. The Canadian-bound
side of the Peace Bridge had closed shortly after
noon, as protesters beat drums and stared down police.
The rally climaxed three days of Buffalo-area protests
against expanding free trade. The crowd had grown to
about 300 as the afternoon wore on. Protesters ranged
from college students to labor union members. One
protester was taken into custody when he attempted to
run through the police line. He was held for about two
hours on trespassing violations. The protesters had
demanded the ability to make a symbolic crossing of
the bridge. After dispersing, the group started
marching to the former site of Trico Products, a
company that moved most of its production to Texas and
Mexico when trade barriers fell. The move resulted in
the loss of about 2,000 jobs. We'll have team coverage
of the day's events on Eyewitness News.
