<< have a friend who's teaching a "diversity" class this summer. She's
looking for some really basic introductory essays that explain/give
background on the concept of "class" - ideas?

Not really basic but interesting is a new title; "Class and Its Others" , essays edited by J.K. Gibson-Graham, Stephen Resnick, and Richard Wolff. In the tradition of Resnick and Wolff this work continues to advance a "non-essentialist" view of class. In fairness I should say most my friends and colleagues hate it.
