Hacking toward Jerusalem . . . disconnecting the dots

I just heard the news that the Rogers communication system in Canada has
been down for 12 hours due to unidentified causes. A few minutes ago, I
received a post from a friend who has had his PC "cache cleaned"
involuntarily. My own IP was down for a couple of days last week because of
a massive system failure and a friend I was talking to on the phone was
unable to send email through her Telus account. Sabotage?
I wouldn't for a moment suggest any connection between telecom vulnerability
and recent political and economic events. To draw a line between, say, code
red and the black bloc would be preposterous. And presumably the tens of
thousands of telecom employees we hear about being laid off every week are
much too busy updating their resumes to even contemplate any hanky-panky.
There is no connection. When things go wrong it is a coincidence. There is
no connection. After all, this is 2001.
