Why not ignore this story until it shows up in the New York Times? Or the Washington Post? Or any news source that you trust? The news source could be an online one, of course. I get a lot of my news from Wired News. And CNet. Those are both sources that I trust. If this story showed up in any of the above news sources then I would take it seriously. But if the story shows up in my email box as something that someone is sending me because they got it from someone else and it sounds alarming, then I know it's a hoax, so I delete and think no more of it.

The people on this list are intelligent and take in large amounts of information every day, and I know that every one of you have, over the years, developed all kinds of mental strategies for figuring out what pieces of information you trust, and which you don't. Therefore it amazes me that anyone in a crowd this smart would ever take anything like this seriously.

When you go to parties and the drunk guy, who's a dentist, sits down next to you and tells you that you gotta get your hands on some of the stock of SuperHiNetTechPlus, because it's at 10 1/4 now but guaranteed to go to 50, do you run out the next day and buy 100 shares?

Email is now important to lots of people, especially the middle and upper classes. If anyone in Congress got serious about taxing it, I promise you that the story will be on the front page of the Washington Post and the New York Times. If it isn't, I'll give each and every one of you 100 shares of SuperHiNetTechPlus.

take care,

lawrence
