Israel yesterday stepped up its assault on Palestinian institutions in Jerusalem, entering the offices of the Palestinian Telecommunications Corporation, evicting about 15 workers, severing transmissions and searching the building.
The Israeli Public Security Minister, Mr Uzi Landau, said the takeover of this and other Palestinian institutions in east Jerusalem since Friday was aimed at preventing Palestinian political activity in the city.
The phone company comes under the control of the Palestinian leader, Mr Yasser Arafat.
The Israeli Prime Minister, Mr Ariel Sharon, told his Cabinet yesterday: "This is the end of the era of Palestinian political activity in Jerusalem."
